Depot Platform Reconstruction

Visitors to our museum today enjoy a pleasant scene that belies the reality of what happened in 2008, when heavy rains caused the Baraboo River to overflow, completely inundating our North Freedom facility. The depot and its platform sustained the heaviest damage as they were in the path of the newly established current.

Initial repairs focused on those things that were essential to resuming train operations and the comfort of our guests: the depot, restrooms, engines and coaches were all repaired in time for our Snow Train 2009 event. Now we are ready to turn our attention to the replacement of the depot platform and the related track repairs which must be done first to determine the platform’s proper height and profile.

Step one was the survey work performed by Grothmann Associates out of Portage, WI. Their role was to determine the current elevations of the track, the platform and all of our structures within the construction area. They also plotted the line that separates the floodway from the flood plain, plus the setback boundaries from the edge of the river.

From these measurements the surveyors developed a site plan, which has been submitted to Planning & Zoning. Their review will determine if our construction plans meet current code and what permits need to be secured before construction can begin.

Major funding for this project is being provided by the Sauk County Emergency Grant Program. We need additional support, however, and welcome all donations towards our Flood Recovery efforts.

We will continue to use this web page as a means to report on our progress until this project is complete
